Missouri paycheck calculator, 2026
Missouri uses a graduated schedule with narrow brackets at the bottom that widen quickly, so the top marginal rate arrives at a relatively low salary. Kansas City and St. Louis each levy a 1% earnings tax that applies to people who work in the city as well as residents — a commuter into either city pays it without ever living there.

Bonuses and supplemental pay
Missouri withholds supplemental wages — bonuses, commission, severance — at a flat 4.7%, separately from your regular salary. A bonus can therefore have a different amount withheld than the same money paid as salary, which is usually why a bonus arrives smaller than expected.
What the Missouri withholding form asks for
| Field | What it does | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| Spouse works | For married filing jointly, select this when the spouse works. Missouri then uses the $16,100 deduction instead of $32,200. | MO Form W-4, line 1 checkbox |
Local taxes in Missouri
These are levied on top of the state tax and are not included in a headline state rate. They are the usual reason two Missouri paychecks with the same salary differ.

Notes and caveats
- A separately paid supplemental or overtime payment may use the 4.7% flat rate or the aggregate method.
- Missouri requires the final per-pay-period withholding amount to be rounded to the nearest whole dollar.
- If no valid MO W-4 is filed, the published default is single with zero exemptions; Missouri's current form has no numeric allowance deduction in this formula.
- Kansas City and St. Louis earnings taxes are calculated separately when the applicable residence or work locality is selected.

This is an estimate of payroll withholding, not tax advice, and not a prediction of your final tax bill. Withholding is what your employer sends in during the year; what you actually owe is settled when you file.
